Head of Credit Risk, Commercial Banking

The Requirements

We're hiring a Head of Credit Risk for Commercial Banking to join us in Dublin

  • It's an opportunity to work at a leadership level at one of the largest domestic Irish banks, and be part of a wider global organisation through our parent RBS
  • You'll be primarily based in Central Park Dublin, but will also work out of George’s Quay when required until we exit that location

What you'll do

Reporting to the Director of Risk, you'll take credit oversight for all portfolios and business areas under the commercial banking franchise, including Corporate Banking, Business Direct and the Lombard Asset & Invoice Finance portfolios, as well as being responsible for accurate reporting. You'll also play a key role in embedding risk management frameworks and a generative risk culture in commercial credit – including by inputting to appetites, policies and frameworks.

As an active participant in the Risk leadership team you'll be a champion for change in credit risk, implementing innovative solutions to deliver real efficiencies which benefit our customers and support business growth. You'll also be a strategic credit risk advisor to the bank's leadership on all matters of commercial credit management, and second line strategic oversight of our commercial portfolios.

Other key aspects of your role will include:

  • Leading a team of around 45 credit risk professionals, fostering a culture of coaching, mentoring, and objective setting and recognition, and making Ulster Bank a great place to work
  • Managing the day to day operation of commercial credit risk, engaging with all stakeholders
  • Being responsible for credit oversight of non-performing loans, supporting the bank in delivering its non-performing loan strategy
  • Advising, consulting and challenging on strategy and the development of credit risk appetite for the Ulster Bank Ireland Commercial Banking business in the context of the overall bank risk appetite
  • Driving credit assessment and approval for portfolios; supporting opportunities to enhance and strengthen our credit profile
  • Driving the management of conduct risk to meet our conduct risk appetite and the expectations of our regulator

The skills you'll need

We're looking for a proven financial services professional with significant industry experience working at a senior level, and clear knowledge and understanding of wholesale banking and all related products and frameworks, including lending, capital markets and asset and invoice finance.

We'll also expect:

  • Experience and evidence of using considerable individual delegated lending authority
  • Experience of impairments, capital, RAROE, credit risk and Basel models, forbearance, IFRS9, RoCL and default
  • Proven management, leadership and motivational skills suitable for developing a highly skilled team of professionals
  • The ability to think strategically and creatively

This is a Central Bank of Ireland Pre-Approved Control Function role, and the employing entity for this role is Ulster Bank Ireland DAC (UBIDAC).

You'll also be an active participant or Chair of the following governance committees, and their associated reporting and decisioning:

  • Credit Risk Committee (as co-Chair with the Head of Credit, Personal Banking)
  • Risk of Credit Loss committee (participant)
  • Provisions committee (participant)
  • Risk Models committee (participant)
  • Commercial Banking Division ManCo and various executive steering groups (as participant and advisor)
  • Enterprise Risk Management Committee (participant)
