Legal Counsel

The Requirements

Join us as Legal Counsel for Ulster Bank in Dublin

  • Joining Ulster Bank Legal, you'll provide Ulster Bank Ireland DAC (“UBD”) with expert commercial, cost effective legal advice
  • Achieving excellent exposure, you'll work with and support the senior executive team, and other UBD colleagues, as well as reach external professional contacts
  • You'll need significant legal experience to join us in this role
  • This role is offered on a a 12 month basis 

What you'll do

You'll advise UBD on all aspects of its Retail and Commercial Mortgage Lending business, including all relevant regulatory codes. We'll look to you to work with other team members to ensure of the effective coordination and cooperation, and to deliver a consistent approach to the provision of legal services to UBD. 

You'll develop and maintain strong relationships with the UBD business teams and understand their objectives, priorities and the markets in which they operate - and will analyse and identify legal risk and assist in the maintenance of a legal risk framework for UBD.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing practical, commercial and high quality legal advice and guidance to UBD
  • Undertaking legal research and analysis of complex legal issues relating to the business of UBD, and advising on the development and implementation of actions, policies and procedures to minimise legal risk 
  • Delivering pragmatic and effective solutions to complex legal problems, assessing alternative courses of action and recommending the right actions going forward
  • Advising on and reviewing banking documentation and facility letters, and changes to legal requirements
  • Influencing banking legislation and its implementation through lobbying with industry bodies and representing UBD externally on industry forums 
  • Sharing and leveraging your technical skills, experience and know how across all RBS Legal teams, and working with various individual businesses on a relationship management basis to fully understand businesses needs
  • Identifying, evaluating and escalating legal or reputational risk issues to relevant business management and other control areas 

The skills you'll need

You'll essentially have the following:

  • Decent post-qualification solicitor experience in the financial services sector, gained from working in private practice or in-house with a major financial institution
  • Good knowledge of general banking and security law - conveyancing and financial services industry
  • Strong commercial awareness and analytical skills
  • An ability to manage a large workload, prioritise and meet demanding deadlines, and work across areas and people 
  • Good knowledge of general banking and security law; conveyancing and financial services industry
  • Good knowledge of Data Protection Law, particularly the requirements of GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive

You'll also have the ability to:

  • Gain the respect of the senior executive team, other UBD colleagues and external professional contacts, and establish, build and maintain strong relationships within UBD
  • Recognise issues of strategic, legal or reputational importance to UBD, particularly relating to Mortgage Lending, and evaluate and advise or direct how they should be addressed and resolved
  • Keep up to date on relevant legal and market developments
  • Set and achieve high performance targets
  • Demonstrate superior drafting skills
  • Work cooperatively with other teams within Ulster Bank Legal and the wider RBS Legal to facilitate the provision of expert legal services to RBS business as a whole
